Located in Thung Yang Subdistrict, Ban Thung Yang is an ancient temple originally known as Wat Mahathat. The temple holds legends about the Buddha’s visit and is distinguished by its Lanna-style wihan (assembly hall) situated at the front. This hall features a three-tiered roof and houses the principal Buddha image, “Luang Pho Prathan Thao,” a Chiang Saen style Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Buddha Mara. The wihan walls are adorned with ancient murals, including Phra Sang Thong story related to Buddhist lore. At the back of the wihan lies the Phra Borommathat Thung Yang, a round bell-shaped Lanka-style stupa enshrining the holy relics of the Lord Buddha. The stupa stands on a 3-tiered square base. The lower base features small stupas at each corner, while the third tier has arched niches on all four sides, suggesting later restorations.
