Doi Khun Tan National Park, Lamphun

Thailand’s longest railway tunnel cuts straight through this mountainous national park, creating one of the country’s most unusual hiking destinations. Doi Khun Tan National Park spans the border between Chiang Mai and Lamphun provinces, where dense teak forests climb steep limestone ridges and mist-shrouded peaks rise above 1,373 meters. The park’s claim to fame lies in its historic railway tunnel – at 1,352 meters long, it’s an engineering marvel that hikers can walk through while trains aren’t passing.

Two main trails wind through the park’s diverse ecosystems, offering excellent wildlife spotting opportunities for patient observers. The tunnel trail leads directly to the famous railway passage, where you’ll hear the echo of your footsteps against cool stone walls and catch glimpses of daylight at both ends. Forest paths reveal troops of macaques swinging through the canopy, while early morning hikers often spot barking deer and wild boar foraging in clearings. Bird enthusiasts can identify over 200 species here, including colorful hornbills and elusive ground-dwelling pittas. The scent of wild orchids and flowering trees fills the humid air, particularly during the cool season.

Peace defines the experience at Doi Khun Tan, broken only by natural forest sounds and the occasional rumble of passing trains. Camping under the stars adds an adventurous element, with basic facilities available for overnight stays. The park feels wonderfully remote despite its accessibility, offering genuine solitude for those seeking escape from Thailand’s busier tourist trails. Cool mountain air provides welcome relief from lowland heat, while morning mist creates an almost mystical atmosphere among the towering trees.

Visit between November and February for the most comfortable hiking conditions and clearest mountain views. The park sits along the railway line between Chiang Mai and Lamphun – take the train to Khun Tan Station and walk directly into the park. Bring sturdy hiking shoes, insect repellent, and plenty of water for trail exploration. Entry costs 100 baht for foreign adults and 50 baht for children, with significantly lower rates for Thai nationals. No guides are required for the main trails, making this an affordable mountain adventure.
