Doi Soi Malai Petrified Wood National Park, Kanchanaburi

Key attractions within the park include: Petrified Wood These are fossilised remains of giant Koompassia malaccensis Maingay ex Benth. from ancient times, estimated to be at least 120,000 years old. One log has been recognised by the Guinness World Records as the world’s longest piece of petrified wood, measuring 69.70 metres in length and 1.80 metres in width, equivalent to a 20-story building. This natural fossilisation process involves replacing tree remains with silica groundwater, leading to sedimentation and eventual petrification. The petrified wood, varying in size from a few centimetres to several meters, is scattered throughout the area, with 7 excavated pits open for tourism and education. The most complete and longest log was found in pit number 1, known locally as “the valley of the giant tree.” Visitors are welcome year-round, with the best visiting months being November to January. Doi Soi Malai The forest mainly consists of cold-climate pine forests. The peak of Doi Soi Malai stands at 1,664 metres above sea level, offering a viewpoint where visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Bhumibol Dam reservoir. The rare and ancient aquatic salamander, resembling a pink lizard, can also be observed in the area. Open daily 08.00-17.30 hrs.  Accommodations and facilities: These are available for tourists including guest houses, tents, and camping sites.
