Mon Mok Tawan (Sea of Mist at Ban Pa Wai)

Mon Mok Tawan is a free 360-degree viewpoint at 1,100 metres above Ban Pa Wai, in Tak’s Phop Phra district near the Myanmar border hills. The site was originally Hmong hill-tribe farmland before campsite operators moved in; it’s now reachable by any vehicle, open daily 07:00-17:00, with no entrance fee.

The sea of mist

The name means “sun mist mountain,” and the draw is straightforward: surrounding peaks trap valley mist that fills in below the summit at sunrise, giving a full 360-degree view over cloud. It’s most reliable in the late rainy season into early cool season — roughly October to November — when the mist runs thickest. During winter proper, the effect shifts to mist pooling in the valleys to the east rather than blanketing the whole area. Flower fields on the mountaintop catch the morning sun once the mist burns off, giving a second, different-looking view later in the same visit.

Staying over

A cluster of small operators at Ban Pa Wai run tent sites and basic cabins, along with shops, coffee stands, and BBQ-buffet restaurants — enough to spend a full evening and be in place for sunrise without driving up in the dark. Atmosphere and timing

This is a working viewpoint community, not a manicured park — expect simple facilities and a genuinely rural feel, with the mist show as the main event rather than curated attractions around it. Arrive before sunrise if you want the clearest mist; cloud typically thickens or burns off by mid-morning.
