Ao Khanom, Nakhon Si Thammarat

Pink dolphins surface playfully in the crystal-clear waters of Ao Khanom, making this stretch of coastline in Nakhon Si Thammarat one of Thailand’s most extraordinary beach destinations. Swimming conditions here are exceptional year-round, with gentle waves and minimal currents making the water perfect for all skill levels. The sand feels fine and powdery beneath your feet, while coconut palms provide natural shade along much of the shoreline. Early morning brings the best dolphin viewing opportunities – scan the horizon for dorsal fins breaking the surface as these rare Irrawaddy dolphins hunt in the shallow bay. Beach massage pavilions operate under the trees, and local vendors sell fresh coconuts and grilled seafood directly from wooden boats pulled up onto the sand. The sound of waves mingles with distant temple bells from nearby Buddhist sites.

Tranquility defines the Khanom experience, where days unfold at a leisurely pace far removed from Thailand’s busier beach scenes. Families spread picnics under the palms while elderly Thai couples wade slowly through the shallows. Fishing activity adds authentic character – watch longtail boats head out at dawn and return with their catch as the sun sets behind the mountains. Visit between November and April for the driest weather and calmest seas, though Khanom’s protected location makes swimming pleasant throughout the year. Regular songthaew trucks connect the beach to Khanom town center, where you’ll find restaurants serving excellent southern Thai curry. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a hat, as shade can be limited during midday hours.
