Ban Than Khun Ratthawut Wichan is a single historic house in the centre of Nakhon Si Thammarat, not a village — a teak home built in 1902 by Nai Khian Malayanon, who was granted the royal title “Khun Ratthawut Wichan” as district officer of Mueang Klai. It stands on Rachadamnoen Road, a short walk from Wat Phra Mahathat, and its ground floor is open as a small family-run museum.

Experience

Inside, the rooms are furnished much as they would have been a century ago: carved wooden furniture, framed family photographs, ceramics and everyday household objects that show how a well-off Nakhon Si Thammarat family lived in the early twentieth century. The house itself is the main exhibit — raised on posts in the panya (hip-roof) style typical of southern Thai architecture, with a high roofline built for ventilation and flood protection, and teak panelling weathered to a deep brown. A family member is usually on hand to explain its history.

The building’s history runs beyond a private residence: in 1939 the family opened it as Ratthawut Witthaya School, later renamed Nakhon Witthaya School, which taught local children until it closed in 1986. A descendant, Samran Treesatyanphun, restored the house as a heritage site in 1993, and the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage recognised the restoration with an Outstanding Architectural Conservation Award in 2013.

Atmosphere & Timing

It is a quick stop rather than a half-day outing; most visitors look around in twenty to thirty minutes. Pairing it with Wat Phra Mahathat and the old city wall makes an easy morning of Nakhon Si Thammarat’s historic core.

Insider Tip: Ask the family member on duty about the school years — the shift from private home to schoolhouse and back to museum is a more interesting story than the furniture on display, and it’s not written up anywhere on-site.

Watch out: There’s no formal signage explaining each room, so a visit without someone to talk to is mostly a walk-through — try to time your stop for when a family member is around rather than at the very edges of opening hours.
