Khao Sip Ha Chan National Park, Trat

Dense tropical rainforest meets rugged mountain terrain at Khao Sip Ha Chan National Park, where fifteen distinct peaks create a dramatic landscape in eastern Thailand. This lesser-explored park spans the border between Trat and Chanthaburi provinces, offering free access to pristine wilderness areas that see far fewer visitors than Thailand’s more famous national parks. The park’s name translates to “Fifteen-Step Mountain,” referring to the series of ascending ridges that define its topography.

Wildlife enthusiasts will find excellent opportunities for spotting hornbills, gibbons, and various tropical bird species throughout the park’s extensive trail network. Several hiking routes wind through primary forest, leading to viewpoints overlooking the surrounding countryside and distant coastline. The sound of rushing water accompanies many walks, as streams cascade down the mountainsides creating small pools perfect for cooling off. You’ll encounter massive dipterocarp trees, colorful orchids clinging to branches, and the rich earthy scent of decomposing leaves that characterizes healthy rainforest ecosystems. Some trails require moderate fitness levels due to steep sections and uneven terrain.

Peace and solitude define the experience here, with only the calls of birds and rustle of leaves breaking the forest silence. The relatively low visitor numbers mean you’re likely to have trails largely to yourself, creating an intimate connection with nature that’s increasingly rare. Morning mist often clings to the valleys, while afternoon light filters through the canopy in golden shafts. This sense of wilderness immersion makes every encounter with wildlife feel special and unrushed.

Visit during the cool season from November to February for the most comfortable hiking conditions and clearest mountain views. The park is accessible by car from Trat town, though some roads may require four-wheel drive during rainy season. Bring plenty of water, insect repellent, and sturdy hiking boots for the rocky trails. Camping is permitted with proper permits, and local guides can be arranged for longer treks into remote areas of the park.
