Phu Khiao-Wildlife Reserve, Ubon Ratchathani

Wild elephants roam freely through the dense forests of Phu Khiao Wildlife Reserve, one of Thailand’s most important elephant sanctuaries. This protected wilderness spans across the borders of Chaiyaphum and Khon Kaen provinces, forming part of the larger Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex. Unlike many tourist-heavy national parks, Phu Khiao maintains its raw, untamed character where nature takes precedence over visitor facilities. The reserve plays a crucial role in conservation efforts, protecting not just elephants but over 200 bird species and countless other wildlife.

Hiking trails wind through evergreen and deciduous forests where the trumpeting of elephants occasionally echoes through the canopy. Early morning walks offer the best chances for wildlife encounters – keep your eyes peeled for hornbills, gibbons, and various deer species moving through the undergrowth. The reserve’s elevated terrain provides scenic viewpoints overlooking the surrounding valleys and distant mountains. Bird watchers will appreciate the diverse avian population, from colorful kingfishers near streams to majestic eagles soaring overhead. The sounds of the forest – chirping insects, rustling leaves, and distant animal calls – create a natural symphony that accompanies every trek.

Serenity defines the experience here, far from the crowds that flock to Thailand’s more famous parks. The atmosphere feels genuinely wild and pristine, where you’re a visitor in the animals’ domain rather than the other way around. Rangers emphasize respect for wildlife, maintaining appropriate distances especially from elephant herds. This authentic wilderness experience appeals to serious nature lovers who appreciate conservation over commercialization.

Visit during the cool season (November to February) for the most comfortable hiking conditions and increased wildlife activity. The reserve opens daily from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with foreign visitors paying 200 baht entry (compared to 20 baht for Thai nationals). Bring sturdy hiking boots, insect repellent, and plenty of water. Camping facilities are available for overnight stays. Access requires a vehicle, as public transportation doesn’t reach the park entrance. While guides aren’t mandatory, hiring one enhances your chances of spotting wildlife and learning about the ecosystem.
