Wat Tham Pha Daen

Wat Tham Pha Daen sits on a hillside in Ban Dong Noi village, about 17 km from central Sakon Nakhon, built around a set of large sandstone rock carvings rather than ancient ruins — the temple was established in 1940. Entry is free and it’s open daily 08:00-16:30.

The carvings are the reason to visit: sandstone reliefs depicting scenes from the Buddha’s life — birth, enlightenment, and parinibbana — worked directly into the hillside rock, alongside a reclining Buddha carved the same way. The climb continues up through landscaped gardens and past an artificial waterfall to the hilltop, where a Buddha image sheltered beneath a seven-headed naga forms the site’s centrepiece. From up there, the view opens out over the Sakon Nakhon countryside — the temple is inland, not on the Mekong, so don’t expect river views despite what some listings claim.

Because the site was only established in 1940 and gained formal wisungkhamsima status in 2018, it reads more as a modern devotional complex built for pilgrimage and photography than a historic monastery — the scale of the stone carvings, rather than age, is what draws visitors from around the province.

Insider Tip: Visit in the cooler morning hours if you’re climbing to the hilltop naga shrine — there’s limited shade on the upper paths and the stone reflects heat by midday.

Watch out: Paths between the carving areas and the summit involve uneven stone steps; sturdy footwear makes a real difference here.
