Phu Phra Bat Historical Park

UNESCO inscribed Phu Phra Bat as a World Heritage Site in July 2024, recognising it as the world’s largest surviving collection of Dvaravati-era sima (ordination-boundary) stones — a scatter of carved sandstone markers left among wind-sculpted rock outcrops on a low sandstone hill in Udon Thani province. It’s Thailand’s fifth cultural World Heritage Site, and it makes Udon Thani the only Thai province holding two — the other being Ban Chiang, the Bronze Age burial and pottery site on the province’s eastern side, roughly a two-hour drive away.

The park’s boulders were carved by water and wind over roughly 15 million years into balanced, mushroom-like shapes, and people have been using the natural shelters underneath them for millennia. Rock paintings inside several shelters — Tham Wua, with its ochre depictions of oxen, and Tham Khon, with human figures — are estimated at 6,000 years old, among the oldest evidence of human presence in this part of Thailand. Centuries later, Dvaravati-period Buddhists (roughly 6th-11th century CE) carved sima stones into and around the same outcrops to mark sacred ground, and by the Lan Xang period a shrine complex had grown up around Ho Nang Usa, the park’s largest and most photographed rock formation — a huge mushroom-shaped boulder balanced on a slender base, topped with a Buddhist chapel.

Insider Tip: Hire one of the local guides at the visitor centre (a small fee, negotiated on the day) — the sima stones and rock paintings are easy to walk past unnoticed without someone pointing out what you’re looking at.

Watch out: There’s little shade between shelters and no food concessions inside the park proper, so bring water and sun protection — the exposed sandstone gets hot by late morning.

The Fine Arts Department first protected the site as a historical park in 1991, decades before UNESCO recognition made it a household name; it remains far quieter than Ban Chiang’s museum-anchored site, with most visitors covering the loop of shrines and shelters in a half-day trip combined with Phra Phutthabat Bua Ban, another Ban Phue district Buddha-footprint shrine, or Ban Chiang National Museum if time allows the full drive east.

Getting there needs your own transport: from Udon Thani town, take Highway 2 toward Nong Khai, turn onto Highway 2021 at the Km 13 marker toward Ban Phue, then follow the signposted turns via Highway 2348 for the final approach — there’s no scheduled public transport to the gate.
