Phu Pha Dak

Phu Pha Dak is a sea-of-mist viewpoint on a forested ridge in Ban Muang subdistrict, Sangkhom district, about a two-hour drive from Nong Khai town. On clear mornings, cloud settles in the valley below and the Mekong River marks the border with Laos beyond it. Entry is free, but the summit is only open 05:00-09:00 and only reachable with a local guide, arranged through the Nong Khai hub’s Sangkhom district office.

The trail starts inside forest temple grounds at the base of the ridge and climbs about 800-900 metres on sloping soil steps, gaining roughly 450 metres in elevation. Most hikers take 30-45 minutes at a steady pace, and the incline runs 45-60 degrees in places — closer to a scramble than a walk in the steeper sections. There is no lighting, so the first stretch is done by headlamp; groups typically meet their guide at the trailhead around 4:00-4:30am to be in position before the mist starts to lift.

At the top, the view opens across a bowl of cloud pressed against the hillsides, with the Mekong and the Lao side of the border visible when the air is clear. The effect is strongest in the 20-30 minutes after sunrise, before the sun burns the mist off — most visitors describe the window as short and worth timing carefully rather than treating as a leisurely morning out. The site is genuinely remote: no vendors, no facilities, no phone signal on parts of the trail.

Watch out: The soil path turns slick after rain and the guide requirement exists for a reason — steep drop-offs run alongside sections of the trail. Do not attempt the climb without a guide or in the dark without a working headlamp.

Insider Tip: Guides are booked through the Ban Muang Subdistrict Administration Organization rather than at a ticket booth on site — call 042 414 871 the day before to confirm a slot and check the morning’s mist forecast, since a clear valley means a wasted climb.

The mist phenomenon is most consistent from the tail end of the rainy season through the cool season, roughly October to February; visiting outside that window is a gamble. Bring water, sturdy shoes with grip, and a headlamp — there is nothing to buy once you are on the trail. Two other Sangkhom viewpoints, Phu Huai I San and Wat Pha Tak Suea, sit within the same district and are worth combining into a single early-morning circuit if you have your own transport.
