Wat Khiriwong, Chainat

Nestled at the intersection of Matuli Road and Daowadueng Road, directly opposite Nakhon Sawan Vocational College, is a temple steeped in history. Originally abandoned and left in ruins, it was believed to have been constructed in the late Sukhothai era, lying desolate for almost 600 years. Rediscovered in 1961 by a pilgrimage monk, its restoration was overseen by the Department of Religious Affairs and the Fine Arts Department. The temple houses several notable features; Phra Chulamani Pagoda (Chedi) This large pagoda, situated atop Daowadueng Mountain, encompasses four floors. It houses a 12-zodiac replica of the Lord Buddha’s footprint set upon a base with a dragon pattern, symbolizing Nakhon Sawan Province. In addition, there are displays statues of famous monks, and Buddha images including the Emerald Buddha and Phra Phuttha Chinnarat. Outside, there’s a statue and biography of Luang Pho Maha Bunrot, the architect of this magnificent pagoda. The top floor enshrines a replica of Phra Phuttha Chinnarat and relics of the Lord Buddha, complemented by exquisite wall paintings depicting the life of the Buddha. The site also offers a breathtaking viewpoint of Nakhon Sawan and its surroundings, including Khao Khop, Bueng Boraphet, Pak Nam Pho Market, Sawan Park, Chao Phraya River’s forming point from confluence of rivers, Dechatiwong Bridge, and the encompassing landscape, particularly stunning at sunset. Phra Phuttha Chinnasi This stucco Buddha image, in the subduing Mara posture and sitting in full lotus base measuring 10 metres by 9 metres. Its distinctiveness lies in the amalgamation of three ancient art styles, the Chiang Saen style evident in the upper parts, including a lotus bud halo and an oblique yellow robe, the Sukhothai style in the face and brachium, and the Rattanakosin style in the altar.
