Wat Si Sawai, Sukhothai

Three towering Khmer-style prangs rise dramatically from the ancient grounds of Wat Si Sawai, making this one of Sukhothai’s most distinctive temple ruins. Originally built as a Hindu shrine before being converted to Buddhism, the temple showcases the fascinating religious evolution that swept through ancient Siam. These corn-cob shaped towers, constructed from laterite and brick, represent some of the finest examples of Angkor-influenced architecture in Thailand’s former capital.

Walking among the weathered prangs, you’ll discover intricate stucco reliefs depicting Hindu deities and mythological creatures still clinging to the ancient walls. The central prang houses remnants of Buddhist statuary, evidence of the temple’s later conversion. Stone lions guard the entrances, their expressions softened by centuries of monsoon rains. During your exploration, listen for the gentle rustle of leaves from the surrounding trees and the distant chanting that occasionally drifts from active temples nearby. The scent of frangipani flowers often perfumes the air, adding a tropical sweetness to this historical setting.

Profound tranquility permeates the temple grounds, creating an almost meditative quality that invites quiet contemplation. Unlike some of Sukhothai’s busier ruins, Wat Si Sawai maintains an intimate atmosphere where you can closely examine architectural details without crowds. The interplay of shadows cast by the prangs shifts throughout the day, constantly changing the visual dynamics of the site and creating excellent photography opportunities from every angle.

Early morning visits offer the coolest temperatures and most favorable lighting for photography, while late afternoon provides dramatic shadows. The temple sits within easy walking or cycling distance of other major Sukhothai Historical Park attractions. Dress respectfully with covered shoulders and knees, and bring sun protection as shade is limited. While entrance to the individual temple is free, you’ll need a park pass for the historical park itself, making this architectural marvel an excellent addition to your Sukhothai temple circuit.
