Phraya Phichai Dap Hak Museum

This teak-built house at Ban Huai Kha in Phichai district marks the actual birthplace of Phraya Phichai Dap Hak, the Thonburi-era general known for fighting on with a broken sword. It’s a separate site from the bronze memorial and battle museum in central Uttaradit town, 44 km to the north — that monument marks where he made his name; this one marks where he was born, in 1741, under his birth name Choi.

The house — built entirely from teak and known locally as Ruen Phraya Pichai — reconstructs how a household of his era and district would have looked: a sleeping room, a kitchen, and a small household shrine, laid out around a central display space. Wall panels trace his life from birth through his rise under King Taksin to his execution in 1782, and a chart sets out the line of his descendants. It’s a quieter, more domestic counterpart to the battle-focused exhibits at the town memorial — worth visiting for the birthplace itself rather than for weapons or armour, since there are none here.

In front of the house stands a seated statue of Phraya Phichai, funded by local residents and installed in 2002 in front of a pagoda-style stupa on the same grounds. The statue and stupa are more recent additions than the house replica, and together they’ve become the focus of an annual local ceremony held on the grounds each year.

Insider Tip: Most visitors to Uttaradit only see the town memorial and never make it out here — if the general’s story interests you, the birthplace site adds real context the in-town museum can’t, since it’s the actual ground he grew up on rather than a commemorative statue site.

The site sits well off the main tourist circuit through Uttaradit, in the same district as Wat Na Phrathat and its revered Luang Pho To Buddha image, making the two an easy pairing for anyone driving out to Phichai district specifically.
