Skywalk at Huai Nam Ri

The skywalk at Huai Nam Ri is a 720-metre steel-reinforced concrete walkway running out across the Huai Nam Ri reservoir at Ban Kiew Kian, in the Charim subdistrict of Tha Pla, Uttaradit. The name sets an expectation this place does not meet: there is no glass floor and no forest canopy under your feet. It is a long, solid pedestrian bridge over open water, and what it offers is distance — the reservoir on both sides and the hills of the Nan river valley behind it.

The reservoir itself is the point. Huai Nam Ri is a Royal Irrigation Department water project, and the walkway was built to give the public a way out onto it rather than around it. Because the deck sits low and level over the water instead of high on a cliff, this is a walk rather than a thrill — closer in spirit to a lakeside promenade than to the glass cantilevers at Kanchanaburi or Khao Kho, and much quieter than either. Locals treat it as a cool-season spot: the surrounding hills and open water make Tha Pla noticeably cooler than Uttaradit town from November through February, and the walkway gets its heaviest local traffic then.

Insider Tip: Come early. The walkway is unshaded for its full length, the reservoir throws the light straight back up at you, and there is no cover at the far end — by mid-morning the deck is uncomfortable and the haze has usually flattened the hills.

Getting here means a drive: Tha Pla sits well outside Uttaradit town and there is no useful public transport, so plan on your own vehicle. Bring water and sun protection, and treat it as one stop on a Nan-valley drive rather than a destination in its own right.

Watch out: Reports on whether the walkway is currently open to the public are inconsistent, and it has been listed as out of service at times. Ring ahead or check locally before making the drive out from town.
