In general, the size of Ruea Ko Lae varies from 10 metres, 11 metres and 12.5 metres in length. The boat construction is distinctive, where the bow and stern are elevated higher than the hull. The boat’s hull is adorned with intricate patterns featuring Melayu, Javanese, and Thai, with a predominance of Thai patterns, such as Kanok, upside down and upturn lotus, Naga’s head, flying Hanuman, including heads of mythical animals from literature, like Burong Si-ngo” or Singhapaksi (a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a bird holding a fish with its beak drawn on the bow). It is believed that this creature is very powerful and good at diving, making it popular among the fishermen. The art on the hull is akin to “fine art on the waves”, as well as being the art for living. The locals here often say that “for the Bang Nara people, living without Ko Lae boats is like living without clothes. Ban Thon is nationally renowned as a place for both real and model fishing boat construction. It also offers various local products, such as handicrafts made from Krachut (a kind of sedge) and seashore screwpine leaves, Budu sauce, and fish crackers. Most of which are also famous souvenirs of the province. Moreover, the beach area serves as a spot for watching planes taking off and landing, as it is just 3 kilometres from Narathiwat Airport. There are also restaurants and accommodation available along the beach.
