Koh Khao Yai and Prasat Hin Pan Yot

Ko Khao Yai is a small limestone island in Mu Ko Phetra National Park, about 3 km by boat from Pak Bara pier in La-ngu district, Satun. Its main draw, Prasat Hin Pan Yot (“Thousand-Peak Rock Castle”), is a limestone formation carved by wind and waves into a cluster of narrow spires, including a natural rock arch that small boats can pass beneath at low tide. Entry follows the standard Mu Ko Phetra National Park fee.

Experience

The island’s main bay, Ao Kam Pu, is fed by a small stream running down from a waterfall inland and stays calm through the year — it’s the usual put-in point for a look at the rock formations by kayak or longtail boat. At the lowest tides the water pulls back far enough to expose coral and marine life along the shoreline, which is the best window for a look at the reef around the bay’s edge. The pinnacle formation itself is the reason most people make the trip: limestone towers rising straight out of the water, weathered into shapes that change as you paddle around them. A fish farm run by Phatthalung province’s fisheries office sits near the island — one of the few signs of human activity on an otherwise undeveloped stretch of park.

Atmosphere & Timing

There’s no jetty or facilities on Ko Khao Yai itself — this is an undeveloped park island, visited as a half-day trip rather than an overnight stay. Low tide is the deciding factor for a good visit: check the tide tables before booking a boat, since the arch and the best of the reef are only accessible when the water drops.

Insider Tip: Ask your boat operator for an early-morning departure — the sea is usually flattest before the mid-morning breeze picks up, which matters more here than at more sheltered islands since the rock channels are narrow.

Practical

Watch out: There’s no scheduled ferry stop at Ko Khao Yai. The regular Pak Bara–Koh Bulon boat passes through the area but doesn’t call here — you need to charter a longtail or join a kayak tour at Pak Bara pier specifically for this island.

Mu Ko Phetra National Park’s office is about 3 km from Pak Bara pier via Highway 416, roughly 56 km from Satun town. Boat charters go through the tour-boat operators based at Pak Bara pier; ask there directly rather than trying to book ahead, since availability depends on the tide and the boat.
