Sai Buri Old Town

Sai Buri Old Town is the historic riverside quarter of Sai Buri district in Pattani province, at the mouth of the Sai Buri River. Malay Muslim and Hokkien Chinese trading families settled here together for generations, and their hardwood shophouses still line Sai Buri and Tha Sadet roads. There’s no entry fee — it’s a walking district, not a ticketed site.

Experience

Sai Buri was one of seven historic towns that made up the old Pattani region before early-20th-century administrative reforms folded them into a single province, and its position at the river mouth made it a trading port for centuries. The buildings that survive along Sai Buri and Tha Sadet roads are built from Takhian hardwood (Hopea odorata) in a Melayu style — steep tiled roofs, covered walkways linking shophouse to shophouse, timber shutters instead of glass. Walking or cycling the two streets takes under an hour, but the detail is in the doorways and roof brackets rather than any single landmark.

At the old river port, a community-led project called Tha Phraya Mueang Sai reopened a waterfront market in 2021, run largely by younger locals working to bring foot traffic back to the riverfront after decades of decline. It sits alongside Taluban Market, the district’s everyday morning market, where the trade in fish, produce and snacks gives a better sense of daily Sai Buri than the historic shopfronts alone. The historic core sits inland from where the river meets the sea at Wasukri Beach and Sai Buri Estuary, a natural add-on if you’re already in the area.

Atmosphere & Timing

Go early. Taluban Market is busiest — and coolest to walk through — before 9 AM, and the old shophouses photograph better in soft morning light than the flat glare of midday. There isn’t much shade along either street, so a hat and water matter more here than the walking distance suggests.

Insider Tip: Time a visit to coincide with Taluban Market’s morning rush rather than dropping by mid-afternoon, when most stalls have packed up and the street can feel closed for business.

Watch out: Pattani is one of Thailand’s deep-south provinces, which has seen sporadic security incidents for two decades.
