The statue of Phaya Mengrai the Great stands proudly at the Pho Khun Intersection, serving as a poignant tribute to his esteemed legacy. Crafted from noble bronze, this monument portrays him in regal attire, wielding a sword, and adorned with traditional Lanna regalia atop a majestic pedestal, towering approximately 3 metres high. Phra Khun Mengrai, the 25th monarch of the Lua Changkharat Dynasty, was born in 1239 and died in Chiang Mai in 1311, as the offspring of Phraya Lao Meng and Phra Nang Thep Kham Khaeng, or Phra Nang Ua-ming Chom Mueang. He built the city of Chiang Rai on Doi Thong from the original foundation that used to be a city in 1262. Under his reign, Chiang Rai prospered, becoming the thriving heart of the Lanna Thai kingdom.
