Phu Chi Dao

Phu Chi Dao is a sunrise viewpoint on the Thai-Lao border ridge in Wiang Kaen district, Chiang Rai province, reaching over 1,800 metres — higher than its better-known neighbour Phu Chi Fa, about 1,628m. What sets it apart is the summit itself: a grassy, largely treeless plateau that opens into a 360-degree view rather than the narrow rock spur Phu Chi Fa is known for. It’s free to visit, with the site open daily.

Getting there is the trade-off for the quieter crowds. From Ban Rom Fa Luang village, the final approach is a steep, unpaved 4WD track — roughly 3km of narrow, rough terrain that isn’t realistic in a standard rental car. Most visitors hire a local pickup truck for the climb rather than attempt it themselves. From the parking area, a stepped trail with handrails covers about 300 metres to the first viewpoint, then an elevated boardwalk continues another 150 metres along the cliff edge to the summit itself. Visitor numbers are deliberately kept lower than at Phu Chi Fa, which is part of the appeal if you’ve already done the more crowded viewpoint.

The reward for the effort is an open sweep of ridgelines fading into Laos, with the valleys below filling with mist most reliably at dawn between November and February. Outside that window — hot season especially — the mist thins out and the view runs clear rather than cloud-filled, which some visitors prefer for photography even without the sea-of-mist effect.

Insider Tip: Arrange a local 4WD pickup the evening before through Wiang Kaen district contacts if you want to be at the summit for first light — vehicles are limited and locally owned, and a pre-dawn arrival with no ride booked means missing the best window.

Watch out: The cliff-edge boardwalk near the summit has minimal lighting before sunrise — bring a headlamp, and take care on the stairs and railings in the dark or after rain.

For a third option on the same ridge, Phu Chi Duean sits a short drive away with its own 4WD access and a plateau suited to overnight camping — worth combining into a two-viewpoint morning if you’re already making the trip out to Wiang Kaen.
