Phu Chi Duean is a sea-of-mist viewpoint in Ban Rom Fa Luang, Wiang Kaen district, on the same Thai-Lao border ridge as Phu Chi Fa and Doi Pha Tang, roughly 8 km away by road. The summit is a wide plateau rather than the narrow rock spur Phu Chi Fa is known for, which makes it one of the easier sites in the area to camp on overnight.

Reaching the top requires a local 4WD — there’s no walk-in trail — costing around 500 THB per vehicle for up to five people, plus 100 THB for each extra passenger up to ten total. The ride runs about 15 minutes over rough track, followed by a short walk of around 10 minutes to the viewpoint itself. Tents can be rented on site for roughly 200 THB for visitors staying to catch the sunrise mist rather than making a day trip of it.

The plateau gives a wide outlook over the ridgeline into Laos, and like its better-known neighbours, the mist forms most reliably at dawn between November and February, when cold air pools in the valleys below. Afternoon views run clearer but without the cloud sea; sunset works if the sky stays open. Temperatures at this elevation drop well below the lowlands after dark, particularly in the cool season, and cloud forest zones start above roughly 1,000 metres.

Insider Tip: Book the 4WD the evening before through the Po Subdistrict Administrative Organization (0 5360 2742) if you’re arriving for sunrise — vehicles are locally owned and limited, and a pre-dawn queue with no ride arranged wastes the best light.

Watch out: There’s no lit path or barrier at the plateau edge — a headlamp is essential for a pre-dawn arrival, and footing near the rim needs care in the dark or after rain. The unpaved 4WD track can also turn difficult after heavy rain, so it’s worth calling ahead during the wet season to confirm vehicles are running before setting out.

Facilities are minimal compared to Phu Chi Fa’s main viewpoint, so plan food and water from Wiang Kaen or the Phu Chi Fa side before heading up. For a third option on the same ridge system, Phu Chi Dao offers another mist viewpoint with its own access arrangement.
