Phra Tamnak Doi Tung

Phra Tamnak Doi Tung is the hilltop residence the Princess Mother, Srinagarindra — King Bhumibol’s mother — had built in 1987 as her base for the Doi Tung Development Project, the programme that replaced opium poppy farming across these Chiang Rai hills with coffee, macadamia, and forestry. The villa blends Thai and Swiss chalet styles, a nod to her years living in Switzerland, and sits at altitude with the cooler air that makes Doi Tung noticeably chillier than the valleys below.

A combined ticket covers four sites here: the Royal Villa itself, Mae Fah Luang Garden immediately in front of it, the Hall of Inspiration, and the Mae Fah Luang Botanical Garden — 220 THB, or 110 THB for students, seniors 60 and over, and monks. Visiting only one of the four costs 90 THB on its own, so the combined ticket only pays off once you’re seeing at least two.

The garden is the most photographed part of the complex: terraced beds of salvia, petunia, begonia, roses, and thorn-apple planted for continuous colour, dotted with more than 70 pergolas and sculptures by artist Misiem Yipintsoi. The Hall of Inspiration, by contrast, is indoor and text-heavy — seven exhibition rooms tracing the Princess Mother’s life and the development work of the five kings in her lineage, aimed more at context than spectacle.

Higher up, the Mae Fah Luang Botanical Garden near Doi Chang Mub viewpoint holds rarer plantings — wild orchid species including Dendrobium infundibulum and Dendrobium draconis, plus azaleas gathered from botanical collections abroad. A small three-metre stupa shaped like an elephant resting on a boulder marks the garden’s entrance, and the viewpoint itself gives a wide panorama over the Doi Tung ridge on a clear day. From late December into January, the grounds host weekend and holiday events with hill-tribe food stalls, handicrafts, and cultural performances.

Insider Tip: Go early — the villa and garden get a steady stream of Chinese and domestic tour groups from mid-morning, and Doi Tung’s cool air is at its best before 10 AM anyway.

Watch out: The site is spread across a hillside with steps and slopes between sections — comfortable shoes matter more here than at a flat palace complex.

Getting There

Phra Tamnak Doi Tung is located at Mae Fa Luang, Chiang Rai, in the hills that give Doi Tung its name — about 45 to 60 minutes’ drive north of Chiang Rai city. View on Google Maps. Phra That Doi Tung, the twin chedis on the mountain’s summit, is a short drive further up the same road and worth combining with the visit. Doi Mae Salong, the separate former Chinese Nationalist hill settlement, is roughly an hour further southwest.
