Cascading down multiple limestone tiers through dense tropical forest, Mae Tia Waterfall offers one of Chiang Mai’s most rewarding jungle adventures. This multi-level cascade plunges through a series of natural pools carved into the mountainside, creating perfect swimming spots surrounded by towering trees and exotic vegetation. Unlike the more crowded waterfalls closer to the city, Mae Tia maintains its wild character, with crystal-clear water that flows strongest during and just after the rainy season from June through November.
The waterfall reveals itself gradually as you follow the jungle trail, with the sound of rushing water growing louder through the forest canopy. Each tier offers something different – shallow pools perfect for cooling off, deeper basins ideal for swimming, and smooth rock formations that create natural water slides. The main cascade drops about 20 meters into a large emerald pool, while smaller falls trickle down moss-covered rocks throughout the area. Tropical birds call from the surrounding trees, and you’ll often spot colorful butterflies dancing around the mist. The water stays refreshingly cool year-round, providing welcome relief from Thailand’s heat.
Peace defines the Mae Tia experience, broken only by the constant music of flowing water and forest sounds. Few visitors make the journey here, so you’ll likely have the falls largely to yourself, creating an intimate connection with nature. The dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy creates constantly changing patterns on the water’s surface, while the negative ions from the falling water leave you feeling energized and refreshed. It’s the kind of place where time seems to slow down completely.
Visit during the rainy season or shortly after for the most impressive water flow, though the falls run year-round. The moderate hiking trail takes about 45 minutes from the parking area, requiring decent fitness and proper footwear with good grip. Bring swimwear, a towel, plenty of water, and waterproof bags for your belongings. The journey into Chom Thong district rewards you with an authentic slice of northern Thailand’s natural beauty, far from tourist crowds.
