Water Activities in Thailand
133 tours across 8 destinations
Thailand has two different water-activities coastlines. The Andaman (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Khao Lak) offers limestone karst scenery, sea kayaking through hongs (collapsed-cave lagoons), and the island-hopping cruises to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay. The Gulf (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) is calmer and cheaper, with sheltered bays suited to jet ski, paddleboard, and banana-boat style activity. Green monsoon season runs late April to October in the Andaman (seas choppy, some islands closed), April to November in the Gulf — so your choice of coast depends heavily on when you go.

Water Activities in Thailand — FAQ
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
For kayaking tours and paddleboard sessions, basic swim ability and a life vest (provided) is enough. Jet ski and banana boat tours have operators onboard. Even "shallow water" snorkelling spots can have swell — always take the life vest if you are unsure.
When is the best time for water activities?
Andaman: mid-November to April — flat seas, all islands open. Gulf (Samui/Phangan/Tao): best January to April and July-September. Book just outside peak weeks (not Dec 26-Jan 5, not Chinese New Year) for better prices and less crowded boats.
Are Maya Bay trips actually worth it?
Yes if you pick an early-bird or sunrise tour that lands before the 9am crowds. The main-hours trips (10am-3pm) are packed — 3,000+ visitors at peak — and the swimming is limited to avoid reef damage. Anything with "sunrise" or "before the crowds" in the title is usually worth the premium.
Is snorkel gear included?
On nearly all boat tours, yes — mask, fins, life vest. Bring your own mask only if you have a prescription or fit issue (rental masks leak on some face shapes). Reef-safe sunscreen is a good call; many operators now require it.
