Crystal-clear waters tumble down a series of limestone terraces at Namtok Choeng Thong, creating one of northern Thailand’s most photogenic multi-tiered waterfalls. This impressive cascade drops through seven distinct levels, each forming natural pools perfect for swimming and relaxation. The waterfall’s name translates to “Golden Stream Falls,” referring to the golden hue the limestone rocks take on when sunlight filters through the forest canopy above.
Swimming in the emerald pools feels refreshingly cool against Thailand’s tropical heat, with the deepest basin at the waterfall’s base offering the best spot for a proper dip. The sound of rushing water echoes through the surrounding jungle, where towering trees create a natural cathedral overhead. Wooden walkways and viewing platforms provide excellent vantage points for photography, especially of the upper tiers where water cascades gracefully over moss-covered rocks. The surrounding forest buzzes with cicadas and bird calls, while the air carries the fresh scent of wet earth and tropical vegetation.
Tranquility defines the experience here, far from the crowds that gather at Thailand’s more famous waterfalls. Families often claim spots along the rocky edges for picnics, while solo visitors find peaceful meditation spots beside the flowing water. The jungle setting feels pristine and wild, offering a genuine escape into nature where the only sounds are water and wildlife.
Visit during or just after the rainy season (June through October) when water flow reaches its peak and the falls display their full power. A moderate 15-minute hike through forest trails leads to the main viewing area, so wear sturdy shoes with good grip. Bring swimming gear, drinking water, and waterproof bags for electronics. The free admission and relatively easy access make this an excellent day trip from either Lampang or Phrae provinces.
