Chulalongkorn Day 2026: Honouring Thailand's Modernising King
October 23 is Chulalongkorn Day, a public holiday honouring King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who reigned from 1868 to 1910 and is credited with modernising Thailand, abolishing slavery, and keeping the country independent during the colonial era. He remains one of the most beloved monarchs in Thai history — his portrait appears in homes, shops, and taxis across the country.
The main ceremony takes place at the equestrian statue of King Chulalongkorn in the Royal Plaza, near Dusit Palace in Bangkok. Government officials, military leaders, and thousands of citizens lay wreaths and flower garlands at the base of the statue throughout the day. The ceremony is formal but the atmosphere is respectful rather than sombre — families come to pay respects and make merit.
Across Thailand, every province with a Rama V statue holds similar ceremonies. Chulalongkorn University, named after the King, holds special events for students and alumni. Some schools organise educational programmes about his contributions to Thai society.
For visitors: Government offices and banks close, but tourist attractions remain open. The Royal Plaza ceremony is worth visiting if you’re in Bangkok — arrive in the morning for the most active period. The nearby Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall and Vimanmek Mansion (both built during Chulalongkorn’s reign) provide context for understanding his legacy. There is no alcohol ban on this day.
