Bangkok New Year's Eve: Countdowns, Fireworks & Hotels

On this page

Bangkok throws one of Asia’s biggest New Year’s Eve parties. On 31 December the city counts down with free concerts at its malls, fireworks over the Chao Phraya River and the Ratchaprasong skyline, rooftop countdown dinners and temple chanting that runs past midnight. The best public vantage points cost nothing.

Quick answer: where to be at midnight on 31 December 2026? For the biggest crowd and a free concert, go to CentralWorld at Ratchaprasong. For the best fireworks, go to the riverfront at ICONSIAM, where the show is set over the Chao Phraya. Both are free, and the 2026 line-ups are usually announced in December. If you want a seat with a view and dinner, book a New Year’s Eve river cruise such as the Chao Phraya Princess New Year Party cruise, which is already on sale for 31 December. Details below.

Book the room before the cruise. December is peak season, and the roads around CentralWorld close from the afternoon, so a bed outside walking distance of your show is a bad plan. These open for the night of 31 December 2026: Centara Grand at CentralWorld is built into the countdown site, Grand Hyatt Erawan sits on the Ratchaprasong intersection, and The Peninsula is on the same bank as the ICONSIAM fireworks. The Main Countdown Events

The details below are from the New Year 2026 countdowns (31 December 2025). These events return every year in much the same shape, but each venue confirms its own 2026 date, line-up and running times closer to the night. Check the venue’s own channels in December before you plan around a particular artist.

CentralWorld Bangkok Countdown

CentralWorld bills its countdown as the “Times Square of Asia”, and the square in front of the mall at the Ratchaprasong intersection draws the city’s biggest crowd. For New Year 2026 it ran a free concert from late afternoon until after midnight, with Thai stars including Billkin, PP Krit, Freen and Becky, The Toys and Joey Boy, followed by fireworks and a drone show over the city centre.

Six roads around the mall closed for the night in 2025: Ratchadamri Road between Pratunam and Ratchaprasong from noon, and the surrounding stretches of Ratchadamri, Rama I, Phloen Chit, Ratchaprarop and Phetchaburi roads from 4pm to 2am. Walk in from BTS Chit Lom (about five minutes) or Siam, and arrive by early evening if you want to be near the stage.

ICONSIAM Amazing Thailand Countdown

IconSiam hosts the Amazing Thailand Countdown on its River Park, the riverside lawn in front of the mall on the Thonburi bank. The New Year 2026 edition ran for five days (27–31 December 2025) with free entry, a Mark Tuan headline set on the final night and a 20-minute show of fireworks, drones and pyrotechnics stretched along about 1.4 km of river at midnight. The previous year’s edition featured Lisa.

The river fireworks are visible from both banks, from the riverside hotels and from the dinner-cruise boats, which is why the river is the most popular place to watch. Get there on the BTS Gold Line to Charoen Nakhon station, or by boat across the river.

Asiatique The Riverfront

Asiatique The Riverfront, the night market south of the centre on Charoen Krung Road, ran a free music countdown for New Year 2026 with Bodyslam, Tattoo Colour, Paradox and Zeal, plus fireworks over the river. It is easier to get around than CentralWorld, and the Ferris wheel gives a raised view if you queue early. Take the BTS to Saphan Taksin and the shuttle boat from Sathorn Pier.

Other countdowns

  • One Bangkok: the new district on Rama IV and Wireless Road held its own countdown for New Year 2026, with Korean artists and a light-and-sound show.
  • NEON Countdown: a ticketed two-night electronic music festival at Rajamangala National Stadium (30–31 December in 2025). Watch for the 2026 dates and tickets in the autumn.
  • Smaller fireworks: the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration approved fireworks at about 20 sites for New Year 2026, including Emsphere and EmQuartier, Seacon Square, Terminal 21, ChangChui and several riverside hotels.

New Year’s Eve Dinner Cruises

A dinner cruise is the most reliable way to see the river fireworks without fighting for space on the bank. Most of the Chao Phraya dinner-cruise boats run a special 31 December sailing that leaves around 8pm, stays on the water for the midnight fireworks and returns around 1am. Expect a festive buffet, a band or DJ and a much higher price than a normal night.

The one we can point you to now is the New Year Party cruise on the Chao Phraya Princess. Hotel pickup starts at 6pm, guests board at River City Pier at 7:30pm, and the countdown is on the boat with a Thai, international and seafood buffet, a live band and an open bar of whisky, wine and beer. It is non-refundable and cannot be changed, and it has only a handful of reviews, so book it once your flights are fixed.

Other boats, including the larger cruises leaving from Asiatique and Terminal 21 Rama 3, usually release their New Year packages in October or November. If you only want a normal night on the river, our regular Chao Phraya dinner cruise from ICONSIAM runs year-round.

Rooftop Bars and Hotel Countdowns

Bangkok’s rooftops sell out on 31 December. For New Year 2026, Vertigo and Moon Bar at Banyan Tree Bangkok (61st floor) and the restaurants at lebua at State Tower, including Sky Bar, sold set-dinner and countdown packages priced well above their normal menus. Hotels near CentralWorld and on the river sell similar packages, often with a view of the fireworks.

Packages usually go on sale in November. Book direct with the hotel or bar, check whether the price includes drinks and service charge, and ask whether your table actually faces the fireworks. Our guide to Bangkok’s rooftop bars covers the main options by area.

Temples and Quieter Ways to See In the New Year

Many Thais spend the last hours of the year at a temple for the New Year’s Eve chanting ceremony (suat mon kham pi), praying from late evening through midnight. In recent years Wat Pho has hosted a public one organised by the Department of Religious Affairs, and other city temples hold their own. Dress as you would for any temple visit, with shoulders and knees covered.

If crowds are not for you, Wat Arun and the riverbank around it are a calmer place to be on New Year’s Day, and the Erawan Shrine next to Ratchaprasong is busy with people making offerings for the year ahead.

Nightlife After Midnight

The party does not stop at midnight. Khao San Road fills with backpackers and street bars, Sukhumvit (Thonglor, Ekkamai and the bars around Asok) and RCA host club nights, and Silom is busy from Patpong to the gay bars of Soi 4. Club lineups change every year and many sell entry in advance, so check each venue’s social media from early December.

Where to Stay for New Year’s Eve

Choose your base by the show you want. Ratchaprasong puts you within walking distance of CentralWorld, which matters because the surrounding roads close. The riverside puts you near the ICONSIAM fireworks and the cruise piers. December is peak season, so book as early as you can.

Getting Around on New Year’s Eve

  • Use the trains. On 31 December 2025, every BTS Skytrain line, including the Gold Line to ICONSIAM, ran until 2am instead of midnight, as did the MRT Blue, Purple, Yellow and Pink lines. Expect a similar extension for 2026, announced in late December.
  • Avoid driving into Ratchaprasong. The roads around CentralWorld closed from noon or 4pm until 2am in 2025. Taxis and Grab cars cannot get close, and surge pricing is steep after midnight.
  • Use the river. Chao Phraya Express Boat and cross-river ferries stop running in the evening, so check the last boat times on the day, or use the BTS Gold Line for ICONSIAM.
  • Plan the way back. Pick a station a few stops from the crowd, or wait 30–45 minutes after midnight for the first rush to clear.

Practical Tips

  • Arrive early. The CentralWorld square and the ICONSIAM riverfront fill by mid-evening. Eat before you go and carry water.
  • Carry some cash. Street-food stalls and tuk-tuks mostly take cash or Thai QR payment, which foreign cards often cannot use. Keep 1,000–2,000 THB in small notes.
  • Travel light. Bag checks are common at the big venues, and pickpockets work dense crowds.
  • Book the paid parts early. Dinner cruises, rooftop packages and fireworks-view rooms sell out first. The public countdowns are free and need no booking.

New Year’s Eve is part of Bangkok’s busiest stretch of the year. Check our Thailand events calendar for what else is on in December, and our Bangkok guide to plan the rest of your stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the main New Year's Eve countdown in Bangkok?
The two biggest are the CentralWorld countdown at the Ratchaprasong intersection, with a free concert and fireworks over the city centre, and the Amazing Thailand Countdown at ICONSIAM, with fireworks and drones over the Chao Phraya River.
