Ban Tha Din Daeng Community

Ban Tha Din Daeng is a Muslim fishing and farming village in Lam Kaen subdistrict, Thai Mueang district — part of the wider Khao Lak area of Phang Nga, about 15 km from Thai Mueang town. The village runs its own community-based tourism programme, built around mangrove kayaking and a demonstration of the old-fashioned tin-ore panning that once supported the local economy. There’s no entry fee to the village itself, though the organised activities are arranged directly with the community group and cost extra.

The area’s history explains why the activities look the way they do. Tha Din Daeng was settled before the Second World War and built its economy on tin mining — the village once held two mining concessions before the industry wound down at the end of the tin boom. Fishing and small-scale agriculture (rubber, palm, watermelon, yardlong bean) filled the gap afterward. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami hit the village hard, and in the years that followed, residents organised formally as a community-tourism group in 2006, turning the mangrove forest, old mining sites, and daily village life into a guided visitor experience rather than starting from nothing.

The activities on offer reflect that layered history. Guides lead kayak trips through the mangrove channels that fringe the village, and a hands-on demonstration shows how villagers once panned for tin ore by hand. You can also watch — or try — traditional crab-trap weaving, take a boat out to Khao Na Yak (a rock formation locally read as a giant’s face), and, depending on the season, join a tie-dye handkerchief workshop or go looking for the non-stinging jellyfish that turn up in the shallows at certain times of year.

Insider Tip: Call ahead rather than dropping in. This is a working community-tourism operation, not a staffed attraction with fixed hours — guides need notice to arrange a kayak or boat trip, and turning up without warning often means nobody’s available to take you out.

Getting there works best with your own transport — a rental car or scooter from Khao Lak or Thai Mueang town, since public transport into Lam Kaen subdistrict is limited. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet or muddy if you’re doing the mangrove kayak or the ore-panning demo, and bring sun protection; most of the activities are outdoors with little shade.
