Which area to stay in
Long Beach (Phra Ae)
The most popular strip — bars, dive shops, and budget-to-mid guesthouses facing a long sunset beach. Best mix of convenience and sand.
Klong Khong
Mellow beach with a handful of beach bars and bungalows. Younger crowd; hammock-and-fire-show vibe without the full resort development of Long Beach.
Klong Nin
Quieter and more local-feeling. A good middle ground — some boutique resorts, fewer tourists, and easy scooter access to the rest of the island.
Kantiang Bay
Tucked-away south-coast bay with one dominant resort and a couple of restaurants. Remote, beautiful, and best for those wanting genuine seclusion.

When to go
Nov–Feb Dry season brings calm water all down the west coast. Speedboat links to Phi Phi and Ko Ngai run daily; scootering between Long Beach, Klong Khong, and Kantiang Bay in a day is easily done.
Mar–Apr Still dry but noticeably hotter. Boat schedules to the surrounding islands hold; crowds thin after March. April is one of the better months to secure a good beach bungalow without forward-booking.
May–Oct SW monsoon means afternoon storms and rough seas from September and October onward. Island-hopping boats reduce frequency or stop. Koh Lanta Yai itself is lush and green — some mid-range resorts stay open.

Koh Lanta: Krabi’s Laid-Back Island Escape
What You’ll Find Here
Koh Lanta brings you that slower island pace without sacrificing natural beauty. Part of Krabi province in Thailand’s Deep South, this Andaman Sea island attracts travelers seeking a more relaxed vibe than some of Thailand’s busier destinations. The island combines gorgeous beaches with protected national parkland, making it perfect for both beach loungers and outdoor enthusiasts. You’ll find a good mix of budget backpackers and upmarket resort guests, but the overall atmosphere remains refreshingly unhurried. With just 2 main attractions but plenty of natural beauty to explore, Koh Lanta works well as either a quick stopover or extended base for exploring the Krabi region.
Top Things to Do
Your time here centers around beaches and outdoor adventures. The island’s coastline offers excellent swimming and sunbathing spots, while the national park provides hiking trails and viewpoints for those wanting to get above sea level. Island hopping is popular from here – you can easily arrange boat trips to explore nearby smaller islands in the Krabi archipelago.
The outdoor adventure options include kayaking through mangroves, snorkeling in clear waters, and exploring the diverse landscapes within the national park boundaries. The designated viewpoints give you panoramic shots of the surrounding islands and coastline. Since there are only a handful of organized attractions, much of your time will be spent enjoying the natural environment at your own pace rather than ticking off a long sightseeing list.
Insider Tip: The national park areas offer some of the best sunset viewing spots on the island. Head to the viewpoints in late afternoon for the best light and fewer crowds than the main beach areas.
Where to Stay
Accommodation ranges dramatically from $6 budget options up to $367 luxury properties, with an average of $47 per night. For top-rated experiences, consider Thai Smile Bungalows for a local feel, or step up to Layana Resort & Spa and Pimalai Resort & Spa for full-service luxury. Mid-range travelers often choose Alanta Pool Villa or Arthaya Villas for good amenities without the premium price tag. The variety means solo backpackers and honeymooning couples can both find suitable options, often on the same stretch of beach.
Getting There
Koh Lanta requires a combination of transport methods since it’s an island in the Deep South region. Most visitors fly into Krabi Airport, then take a combination of bus and ferry to reach the island. Some travelers arrive via Phuket, which offers more international flight options but involves a longer overland journey. During high season, direct speedboat services run from various points along the Andaman coast. The journey typically takes 2-3 hours from Krabi town, including the ferry crossing.
Best Time to Visit
Koh Lanta sits on the Andaman coast, so the southwest monsoon brings wet season from May through October — September and October are the wettest months. November through April is the dry season, with calm seas perfect for island hopping and water sports. During wet season, expect afternoon storms and rougher sea conditions that can affect boat schedules to surrounding islands.
Practical Tips
ATMs are available but not abundant, so stock up on cash in the main town areas. English is widely spoken at hotels and tour operators, but learning basic Thai phrases helps with local interactions. Motorbike rental is the most popular way to explore the island – just ensure you’re comfortable with Thai traffic patterns first. Most beaches have minimal facilities, so bring water and sun protection. The pace is genuinely slower here, so don’t expect mainland efficiency for services.
