Loei Museum

Loei Museum occupies the former Loei Provincial Hall on Charoen Rat Road, a wooden building from 1953 that once served as the seat of provincial government. Entry is free, open daily 08:00-17:00, and the whole visit takes about an hour.

The building itself is the first exhibit. Provincial officials moved out and handed it over for restoration, and it reopened as a museum on 9 September 2009. Upstairs, a preserved royal reception room displays the chairs used when King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit stayed here during their visit to Loei on 6-7 November 1955 — one of the few tangible traces of that visit left in the province. The rest of the upper floor covers the city’s history and its cultural traditions.

Downstairs, seven themed zones move through prehistoric archaeological finds from the province, the ethnic communities who settled Loei’s mountain valleys, local geology and geography, and the administrative history of the province itself. Displays lean on photographs, maps, and everyday objects — pottery shards, tools, textiles — rather than flashy multimedia. English labels cover the basics; a translation app helps with the denser Thai-only panels.

Insider Tip: Air conditioning is limited to a couple of rooms, so this works best as a midday break between outdoor stops rather than the first thing on a hot morning.

The province’s other festival, Phi Ta Khon, gets a brief mention here but its real home is the Phi Ta Khon Museum in Dan Sai, roughly an hour’s drive away, where the coconut-sheath masks and parade costumes fill an entire building. For textiles and khaen music, Loei Cultural Center covers similar ground with a different focus. Loei Museum works best as an orientation stop before exploring the rest of Loei province — a quick grounding in the region’s history before heading out to its temples, waterfalls, and mountain viewpoints.
