Pak Bara Beach

Pak Bara Beach in La-ngu district is the main mainland gateway to Koh Tarutao and the wider Tarutao National Marine Park in Satun province. Most visitors pass through its pier without lingering, but the beach itself has clean sand and clear water worth a look while you wait for a boat.

The pier sits at the mouth of Khlong La-ngu, about 8 kilometers from La-ngu district town, and handles a steady flow of longtails and speedboats loading passengers for Tarutao National Park, Koh Lipe, Koh Adang-Rawi, Koh Khai and Koh Bulon, alongside working fishing boats that give the harbor an unpolished, functional feel rather than a resort-pier atmosphere. Once you land on Tarutao itself, Ao Son is the most common first stop. Restaurants along the beachfront serve fresh seafood to travelers waiting on a departure.

The beach quiets down outside boat hours — early morning is mostly local fishermen preparing gear, while the 9 AM-to-lunchtime window is when island-bound crowds build around the ticket booths. Once the last afternoon departures clear out, Pak Bara reverts to a fairly ordinary provincial beach.

Ferries run daily in season, roughly mid-October through May, matching Tarutao National Park’s own operating months, with several direct departures a day. From Hat Yai, allow around two hours by road to reach Pak Bara — plan for traffic and a stop at La-ngu town on the way.

Insider Tip: If you’re only passing through, the fried seafood stalls right by the pier are better value than the tourist-facing restaurants further along the beach road.

Watch out: Boats to the islands are seasonal — Tarutao National Marine Park closes annually from mid-May to mid-October, and Pak Bara’s ferry schedule shrinks or stops accordingly. Check current sailings before planning a trip outside the November-to-April window.
