Phuket Aquarium
สถานแสดงพันธุ์สัตว์น้ำภูเก็ต (ภูเก็ตอควาเรียม)
Phuket Aquarium sits on the Cape Panwa peninsula, run by the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC), a Department of Fisheries research unit that also rescues injured sea turtles, dolphins and dugongs found around the island. Entry costs 300 THB for foreign adults and 150 THB for foreign children, 80 THB and 40 THB for Thai nationals; the aquarium opens daily from 08:30 to 16:30.
The exhibit halls focus on Andaman Sea species rather than an imported global collection: clownfish, groupers, moray eels and small reef sharks fill the tanks, and a short walk-through tunnel lets you look up at rays and larger fish moving overhead. Touch pools hold starfish and sea cucumbers for hands-on encounters. Behind the main building, outdoor tanks house the turtle rehabilitation programme that gives the PMBC its research mandate — sea turtles recovering from injury or illness before they’re released back into the Andaman Sea, viewable as part of the standard admission rather than as a separate paid extra.
The aquarium has operated at this site since 1983, making it one of the older marine facilities in southern Thailand, and it still functions primarily as a research and conservation station with the public exhibit as a secondary role. That shows in the pacing: it’s a modest-sized facility you can cover properly in an hour to ninety minutes, not a half-day theme park, and the crowds are usually thin outside school holiday periods.
Insider Tip: Don’t confuse this with Aquaria Phuket, the newer commercial aquarium inside Central Floresta Phuket in town — different operator, different (much higher) ticket price, and a different building entirely. If you specifically want the turtle rescue tanks and the PMBC’s conservation angle, this Cape Panwa site is the one you want.
Watch out: Ticket prices here have risen over the past couple of years, and some travel-booking sites and forums still list the old 100 THB foreigner rate. Budget for 300 THB per foreign adult at the gate rather than trusting an outdated listing.
