Thai entry Adult: 80, Child: 40

Sopha Arboretum sits just off Sukhumvit Road near the Ban Phe turn-off, about 17 km from Rayong town on the road out toward the Koh Samet ferry pier. It’s open daily except Thursdays, 09:00 to 16:30, with an 80 THB adult entry fee — not the near-midnight hours some older listings claim, which don’t hold up against current sources.

The site combines a botanical garden with the Sopha Foundation’s Thai House Museum, a cluster of traditional timber buildings relocated and restored on the grounds. Paths wind between planted sections of native and ornamental tropical species, with the wooden houses functioning as small galleries for local art and household antiques rather than a single big-ticket exhibit. It’s a modest, family-run operation rather than a major botanical institution — closer in scale to a well-tended private garden than to somewhere like Nong Nooch.

Insider Tip: This isn’t the only arboretum on this stretch of coast road. Phe Arboretum, a free pine-forest reserve a few kilometres closer to Ban Phe, is a different and larger site — don’t assume they’re the same place if you see both mentioned for the area.

Watch out: The garden closes at 16:30, not late evening — don’t plan an after-dinner visit expecting it to still be open, despite what some third-party listings suggest.

Shade from mature trees keeps the grounds walkable through the hotter parts of the day, and the layout is compact enough to cover in an hour or so. Bring water and insect repellent, and expect a quiet, low-traffic visit outside weekends. It works well as a stop on the way to or from Laem Mae Phim beach further along the coast road, rounding out a half-day covering this section of the Mae Phim coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Sopha Arboretum's actual opening hours?
Daily 09:00-16:30, closed Thursdays. Older listings quoting near-midnight closing times are wrong — that's not accurate for this site.
How much does it cost to get in?
80 THB for adults, around 40 THB for children — the fee applies to all visitors and there's no separate posted foreigner rate.
Is it a garden, a museum, or both?
Both. The grounds combine a plant collection with the Sopha Foundation's Thai House Museum, a set of traditional Thai timber buildings on the same site displaying local art and antiques.
How far is it from Rayong town?
About 17 km, just off Sukhumvit Road near the turn for Ban Phe, the pier town for ferries to Koh Samet.
Is it the same place as Phe Arboretum nearby?
No — different site. Phe Arboretum is a free 625-rai pine forest reserve 4 km from Ban Phe; Sopha Arboretum is a smaller, paid garden-and-museum property a few kilometres away on the same stretch of coast road.
