Car rental in Thailand is a good idea only in the right places. It can unlock northern loops, Phuket beaches, Samui viewpoints and national parks that are awkward by public transport. It is a bad idea for a Bangkok-only stay, where traffic, parking, tolls and motorbike-heavy roads make every short trip harder than it needs to be.

Most visitors should bring their home licence and an International Driving Permit; valid licences issued by ASEAN member countries may be recognised without an IDP. Photograph every scratch before leaving the rental lot, and do not rely on basic CDW if the excess is high. Compare the live total because airport, season, vehicle and insurance choices move the price materially.
Phuket and Chiang Mai are the strongest first targets. In Phuket, a car can make sense if you are staying away from Patong and want beaches, viewpoints and restaurants without negotiating taxis. In Chiang Mai, it works for Doi Inthanon, Mae Rim, sticky waterfalls and longer northern routes. On Koh Samui, it can be useful if your villa is up a hill or away from the ring road.
Do not rent only because it looks cheap per day. Add parking, fuel, tolls, insurance, hotel access and your comfort with left-side driving. If you want someone else to handle the road, use a private driver instead; if you only need airport-to-hotel transport, a normal airport transfer is simpler.
Insider Tip: Compare the pickup desk location before booking. “Phuket Airport” or “Chiang Mai Airport” can mean an in-terminal counter, a short shuttle ride, or a nearby office with slower paperwork.
Watch out: If your licence is not covered by the ASEAN exception, sort the IDP before flying. Even when local law recognises a document, the rental supplier can impose its own verification rules.
