Ao Wong Deuan curves in a wide crescent along the east side of Koh Samet, and after Hat Sai Kaew it is the island’s busiest beach. Resorts, restaurants and beach bars line the sand, speedboats and ferries pull in through the day, and the calm, clear water draws weekenders from Bangkok a few hours away. This is a lively, social beach rather than a hidden cove.

Swimming in the calm, translucent waters reveals excellent visibility perfect for spotting tropical fish near the rocky outcrops that bookend the bay. The gentle slope of the sandy bottom makes wading comfortable for all ages, while the lack of strong currents creates ideal conditions for floating and relaxing. Along the shore, coconut palms provide natural shade where you can listen to the rhythmic sound of small waves meeting sand. Fresh sea breezes carry the clean scent of salt water, unmarred by the diesel fumes common at busier beaches. Small fishing boats occasionally drift past the bay’s entrance, adding authentic local character to the seascape.

Ao Wong Deuan makes an easy base, with a cluster of accommodation from simple bungalows to mid-range resorts and plenty of places to eat and drink steps from the sand. Beach massage salas operate under the trees and vendors sell drinks and grilled seafood, while jet skis and banana boats run offshore. For more space, a footpath over the headland leads to the quieter neighbouring bays of Ao Thian (Candlelight Beach) and Ao Cho.

Early morning is the calmest, quietest stretch before the day-trippers arrive. Koh Samet sits within Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park, so a park entry fee applies (around 200 THB for foreign visitors, 40 THB for Thais), collected on the island. Reach Ao Wong Deuan by ferry or speedboat from Ban Phe pier on the mainland — some boats run direct to the beach, otherwise it’s a short songthaew hop from the main pier at Na Dan. Bring sun protection and cash, as there are no banks on the beach.
