Hat Sai Kaeo, marketed as Diamond Beach, is the busiest and most developed stretch of sand on Koh Samet — a 1 km strip of fine white sand right beside Na Dan pier and the island’s main town. Fine white sand and calm, warm water are the constants; big resorts, restaurants, and watersports operators are what actually define the experience.

Almost every visitor lands at Na Dan pier and walks straight onto this beach, so it fills up fast with day-trippers and overnight guests alike. Jet skis and banana boats work the shallows by day, and the southern end of the beach turns into the island’s main nightlife strip after dark — bars, fire shows, and beachfront restaurants stay busy well past sunset. That level of activity means the water close to shore isn’t the place for a real snorkel: boat traffic and years of development have thinned out the coral you’ll find drawn on old brochures. Genuine snorkeling on Koh Samet means booking a boat out to the smaller surrounding islands.

Insider Tip: If you want the convenience of Hat Sai Kaeo’s restaurants and shops but a quieter stretch of sand, walk 10-15 minutes toward either end of the beach — the crowd thins out fast once you’re past the main resort cluster near the pier.

Watch out: Almost everyone arriving on Koh Samet pays a national park entrance fee at the pier — 200 THB for a foreign adult, 40 THB for a Thai adult — since the whole island falls inside the Khao Laem Ya-Mu Ko Samet National Park. It’s separate from anything charged on the beach itself.

For a genuinely calm beach day, Ao Wong Duan and Ao Tubtim are both a short songthaew ride south and see far less foot traffic than Sai Kaeo.

Key Facts:
  • Entry fee: Free for the beach; 200 THB foreign adult / 40 THB Thai adult national park fee at the pier checkpoint
  • Size: About 1 km long, next to Na Dan pier and Samet’s town centre
  • Best for: Convenience, restaurants, and nightlife — not quiet swimming or snorkeling
  • Quieter alternatives: Ao Wong Duan, Ao Tubtim
  • Best season: November-March for driest weather

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hat Sai Kaeo the same as Diamond Beach?
Yes — "Sai Kaeo" translates to diamond sand, and it's commonly marketed as Diamond Beach. It's Koh Samet's main beach, directly beside Na Dan pier and the island's small town centre.
Do I pay extra to visit this beach?
The beach itself is free, but almost everyone arriving on Koh Samet pays the Khao Laem Ya-Mu Ko Samet National Park entry fee at the pier checkpoint — 200 THB for a foreign adult, 100 THB for a foreign child, 40 THB for a Thai adult. It's a one-time island entry fee, not a per-beach charge.
Is Hat Sai Kaeo good for snorkeling?
Not directly from the beach — boat traffic, jet skis, and years of development have thinned out what coral there was close to shore. For real snorkeling, book a boat trip to the smaller islands and reefs further out.
Is Hat Sai Kaeo quiet?
No — it's the busiest, most developed beach on the island, lined with resorts and restaurants, with watersports during the day and a nightlife strip at the southern end after dark. For a quieter beach, Ao Wong Duan or Ao Tubtim are short songthaew rides away.
What's the best time of year to visit?
November through March for the coolest, driest weather. The beach is swimmable year-round, but the Gulf coast sees more rain June to October.
