Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Museum
พิพิธภัณฑ์สึนามิบ้านน้ำเค็ม
Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์สึนามิบ้านน้ำเค็ม) is an indoor learning centre in Bang Muang, Takua Pa — about 25–26 km north of central Khao Lak and roughly 1.3 km from the outdoor Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Park. It is not the park: the park centres on a curved wave wall and a fishing boat left inland; the museum holds galleries, video orientation, and survivor-focused exhibits about the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the village’s recovery. Ministry of Culture coverage marks the building’s official opening ceremony on 4 February 2022 (construction from around 2017). Locals sometimes call it the orange-and-blue boat museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์เรือส้ม-ฟ้า) for boats displayed with the outdoor approaches.
Tourism Authority of Thailand and museum-directory sources commonly list free entry and hours of about 08:30–16:30 Wednesday–Sunday, closed Monday–Tuesday — treat that schedule as best available public guidance and confirm on site or via the museum’s Facebook if you need a fixed slot. Group visits may need an advance request letter. Phone listings include 076-410245; email Bannamkhemtsunami@gmail.com appears in TAT Thai coverage.
Watch out: Do not confuse this stop with Bang Niang’s Police Boat 813 and Tsunami Memorial Sculpture, which sit ~20–26 km south of Ban Nam Khem. A half-day Khao Lak memorial loop can include Bang Niang first, then drive north to the park and this museum — but check the museum’s Mon–Tue closure before you go.
Insider Tip: Pair the outdoor park (names wall + boat) with this indoor museum on the same trip so you get both the open-air memorial atmosphere and the exhibit narrative. Dress modestly, move slowly through galleries, and leave time for quiet reflection rather than rushing between photo spots.
