Ban Nam Rap Rafting

Ban Nam Rap is a community-run boat trip through mangrove forest on the Kantang coast of Trang, not whitewater rafting despite the name. Local guides from Bang Sak run small groups by longtail boat and bamboo raft along tidal channels, with the tagline “ล่องแพ กินปู ดูเขา” — raft, eat crab, see the hill.

The route runs through a mangrove corridor where the canopy closes in overhead, then opens onto a tidal sandbar exposed only at low water. On a bend in the channel, a stand of mangrove forms a shape locals call the heart-shaped island, best seen from above — which is the reason for the side trip up Khao Chom Pa, a limestone hill with a viewpoint over the mangrove and the Andaman coast beyond. Freshly caught mud crab is typically part of the day, cooked and eaten as the highlight rather than an add-on.

Because the sandbar and the narrower channels only work at low tide, this is a pre-booked community tour rather than a turn-up activity. Insider Tip: Ask for a morning slot timed to the low tide — the sandbar and heart-shaped island view are only there for a couple of hours either side of it, and afternoon light is flatter for photos from the Khao Chom Pa viewpoint.

Watch out: There’s no rapids and no adrenaline here — if you’re after actual whitewater, this isn’t it. The mud around the sandbar and crab area is genuinely mud, not packed sand; old shoes or water shoes save your sandals.
