Ban Wang Wa Tourism Community

Ban Wang Wa is a community-run agro-tourism cooperative in Klaeng district, not a village you can wander into unannounced — every visit runs as a pre-arranged group programme, booked ahead through Rayong’s community-tourism network rather than dropped in on. The set-up won recognition at the 2021 Thailand Tourism Awards in the tourist-attraction category, for turning ordinary farm life into a structured half-day programme rather than a staged show.

The core activity is a raft or boat trip along Khlong Kao Kaeng, the mangrove-lined canal running through the community, past a stand of mulberry trees reckoned to be a century old. Fruit-orchard visits follow, with durian, rambutan, mangosteen, and longan grown on-site — visitors pick and eat what’s in season rather than working from a fixed menu, so April to June, Rayong’s durian and rambutan season, is when there’s the most to try. A weaving demonstration shows how mats are made from khla reed grown locally, and groups with children often get a short traditional dance performance as part of the programme.

None of this is polished for a crowd. Guides are local residents rather than trained tour staff, English is limited, and the pace depends on who’s leading that day’s group — expect a working farm and canal, not a curated attraction with signage and a gift shop. Rafts are poled or paddled rather than motorised, which keeps the mangrove stretch quiet enough to spot herons and the odd monitor lizard along the bank.

Insider Tip: Ask about fruit availability before you book — durian and mangosteen are at their best only a few months a year, and an off-season visit means the orchard walk without the tasting.

Watch out: There’s no facility for solo walk-in visitors. Arriving without a pre-arranged group booking means no guide, no boat, and nothing to do — book ahead, even for a small group of two or three.

Entry itself is free; the cost, where there is one, comes from the specific activities and any meals arranged as part of your programme. Opening hours run 09:00-16:00 daily, though bookings determine your actual start time. Overnight homestays are available with at least seven days’ notice, giving a longer look at the community than the day programme covers. The village sits a short drive from central Rayong along the Klaeng route.
