The Half Moon Party on Koh Phangan — branded Halfmoon Festival by the organiser — is the island’s main ticketed electronic festival, separate from the free-entry Full Moon Party at Haad Rin. In its 23rd year, the current format is a bi-weekly two-part event in Ban Tai (Baan Tai): a beach afternoon/evening at Harmony Beach Club, then an all-night inland forest party at Halfmoon Magic Forest.

If you arrived expecting the old free Saturday beach-party framing, update that mental model. Today’s Halfmoon is a paid production with stages, lighting, and advance tickets. It still sits in the Ban Tai area, not on Haad Rin’s sand — and that geography alone changes the night.

What to Expect

Day 1 — Harmony Beach Club (Ban Tai beach)

Sunset-facing beach club party: daytime into midnight, more open-air and social than the forest night. Handy if you only want one ticket or need a softer warm-up before Magic Forest.

Day 2 — Halfmoon Magic Forest (Ban Tai inland)

The main event. Three stages until sunrise:

Halfmoon vs Full Moon Party

Plenty of travellers do both in one lunar week: Full Moon at Haad Rin, then Halfmoon a week or so later (or the reverse, depending on that month’s published dates). Stay in Ban Tai or split nights between Ban Tai and Haad Rin.

Budget extra for songthaews/Grab, water, and food. Accommodation in Ban Tai rises around peak Halfmoon weekends the same way Haad Rin spikes for Full Moon.

• Thong Sala ferry pier → Ban Tai: songthaew or Grab (short ride along the south coast).
• Haad Rin → Ban Tai: songthaew / taxi; agree the price before you get in, especially after midnight.
• Magic Forest inland approach: the last stretch is away from the beach road — follow organiser signage or pin the address from your ticket. Sharing a taxi with friends is simpler than navigating a dark jungle road after drinks.

5. Hydrate and pace drinks — free-drink inclusions still add up with heat and dancing until sunrise.
6. Same safety basics as Full Moon — watch your drinks, leave valuables at the hotel, arrange transport before you are exhausted, and skip illegal drugs (penalties in Thailand are severe).

Skip or do selectively: anyone who only wants one cheap beach night — stick to Full Moon entry (~200 THB). If you dislike advance ticketing, ID checks, or inland jungle venues after midnight, Harmony Beach Club day-only is the softer Halfmoon option.

Stacking tips: a 5–7 night Ban Tai stay can cover Jungle Experience (when it falls before Full Moon), Full Moon at Haad Rin, and a Halfmoon weekend if the organiser’s bi-weekly calendar lines up. Confirm all three calendars the week you arrive — lunar holidays and alcohol bans still move nights.
