Vendors dress in traditional Thai clothing and greet customers with old-fashioned Thai politeness; costume rental is available on site if you want to join in rather than just watch. Stalls are built from natural materials — bamboo, wood, thatch — in a rustic, historical style that fits the temple grounds’ big shade trees. What’s sold is genuinely local: grilled fish and shrimp, old-style Thai desserts, handmade crafts, and fresh vegetables and fruit from nearby farms, most of it priced in the tens of baht. Weekends bring folk performances from community groups and local children, adding music and dance to the food and shopping.

The setting matters here as much as the market itself. Wat Pho Kao Ton is the temple where the monk Phra Ajarn Thammachot blessed the Bang Rachan villager-defenders before their stand against Burmese forces in 1765-66, and the market’s period costuming plays off that same local history rather than being a generic theme import. Parking is spacious — the temple grounds accommodate roughly 500 vehicles, which matters on a busy weekend.

Watch out: This is a weekend-and-holiday-only market. A weekday visit to Wat Pho Kao Ton is still worthwhile for the temple itself, but the market stalls, costumes, and performances won’t be there outside Saturday-Sunday hours.
