Bueng Boraphet Freshwater Aquariums

The Bueng Boraphet Freshwater Aquarium is Thailand’s only aquarium built inside a boat-shaped building — a 35.5-metre-wide, 49-metre-long hull rising from the shore of Bueng Boraphet, the country’s largest freshwater swamp lake. It opened in December 2007 to mark the King’s 80th birthday and displays more than 100 species of Thai freshwater and estuarine fish, including giant catfish, inside a 24-metre glass tunnel. Entry is 49 THB for adults and 19 THB for children.

Experience

The visit starts in the ground-floor tunnel, where fish circle overhead and to the sides — the main draw for the school groups that fill the car park on weekends. Staff run a feeding dive at 15:00 daily, when divers hand-feed the tank while a guide narrates over the speaker system, and short animated films on wetland ecology play at 10:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 14:00 in a small theatre inside. A separate crocodile enclosure sits behind the main building (30 THB adults, 20 THB children, on top of the aquarium ticket), and the lake authority also runs sightseeing boat trips around Bueng Boraphet’s reed beds for birdwatching.

Atmosphere & Timing

The building itself is as much the novelty here as the fish inside it — a genuine curiosity if you’re already at Bueng Boraphet for the birdwatching or the nature trail nearby, less so as a destination on its own. Weekday mornings are quiet; Saturday, Sunday and public holidays bring school trips and push the opening time half an hour earlier. The lake itself draws serious birders from December to February, when migratory waterfowl arrive in numbers.

Insider Tip: Time your visit for the 15:00 feeding dive — it’s the liveliest the tank gets all day, and the tunnel empties out for photos in the hour right after the last animated-film slot clears the school groups.

Watch out: The tunnel and tank areas run humid and can smell strongly of fish. Most people are through in 20-30 minutes, so treat it as a stop alongside the wider lake rather than a destination worth the drive on its own.
