Chalerm Prakiat Aquarium

Chalerm Prakiat Aquarium is a free, government-run freshwater aquarium built out over Bueng Si Fai, Phichit’s central lake. It falls under the Phichit Inland Fisheries Research and Development Center, and the building itself is worth a look before you even get to the tanks — a nine-pointed star extending into the water, put up to mark King Bhumibol’s fifth-cycle (60th) birthday in the 1980s.

Inside, more than 20 species of Thai freshwater fish rotate through the display tanks, among them giant catfish, snakehead and river carp species you won’t see labelled this clearly anywhere else in the region. Bilingual Thai-English signage explains what each species is and where it lives in the wild. The real draw, though, is the opening built into the centre of the building: a viewing point that lets you look straight down into Bueng Si Fai itself, so the aquarium tanks and the actual lake become part of the same display.

It’s a modest, low-key stop rather than a headline attraction — a handful of rooms, not a sprawling marine park — and that’s exactly its appeal for families passing through the central plains with an hour to spare. The air-conditioned interior is a welcome break from the heat outside, and it rarely gets crowded even on weekends.

Insider Tip: Time your visit for late afternoon on a weekend, when the extended hours (open until 19:00 versus 18:00 on weekdays) line up with cooler temperatures for a walk around the rest of Bueng Si Fai afterward.

The aquarium sits on Thanon Bueng Si Fai in Mueang Phichit district, easily reached by car or motorbike with parking on-site. There’s no public transport running directly to the door. Bring a camera for the building itself, and pair the visit with a loop around Bueng Si Fai or a stop at the Water Lily Park nearby to fill out a half-day in Phichit.
