Don Hoi Lot

Don Hoi Lot is a tidal sandbar at the mouth of the Mae Klong River in Samut Songkhram, exposed only at low tide — and only really worth the trip if you time it right. A Ramsar-listed wetland since 2001, it’s the main habitat of the razor clam (hoi lot) that gives the place its name, and the reliable low-tide window for walking the flats falls mostly in the dry season, roughly November through April, with March to May the strongest stretch.

At low tide the mudflats stretch out from shore, dotted with the small holes razor clams leave as they burrow. Watch the surface closely and you’ll catch the telltale water-spurt as a clam senses your footsteps and pulls deeper into the mud. Vendors near the entrance rent simple digging tools if you want to try pulling one out yourself, though most visitors are content to watch — the clams are quick, and the mud is not forgiving of anyone not braced for it. Wooden walkways cover part of the flats for drier footing, and longtail boats run short trips from shore for a look without wading in.

Come at the wrong tide and there isn’t much of a beach to see, which is the honest catch with Don Hoi Lot — this is not a swimming beach, and the water is brackish and brown rather than clear. What it offers instead is a working tidal ecosystem: families picnicking under simple shelters, kids poking at tidal pools, and seafood stalls grilling the day’s razor clams a few steps from where they were dug up.

Watch out: Tide timing makes or breaks the visit. Check a Samut Songkhram tide table before you drive out, not after — there’s no fallback plan if you arrive at high tide and the sandbar is underwater.
