Freedom Beach

Freedom Beach is a cove of white sand on Phuket’s southwest coast, wedged between Patong and Karon and reachable only by longtail boat or a jungle trail — there’s no road in. That effort keeps it far quieter than either neighbour, though “secluded” is relative: high-season boats bring a steady stream of day-trippers by mid-morning.
Longtail boats leave from the southern end of Patong Beach near Amari Phuket, a 10-20 minute ride that costs roughly 1,200-2,000 THB return depending on how hard you haggle. Boats mostly run December to May; during the May-October monsoon, Andaman swell can shut the crossing down for days at a time. The alternative is on foot — a steep trail off Patong Hill Road (25-30 minutes down) or an easier path from near Lek Sand Beach Bar (15-20 minutes). Walk-in visitors pay a 200 THB entry fee at the access point; boat arrivals generally don’t. Either way, the way back up is the hard part — allow more time than the descent and avoid the early afternoon heat.
Watch out: Rip currents pick up during the monsoon swell, and there are no lifeguards on duty. If the sea looks rough, ask locally before swimming out past the shallows.
The beach itself has clear water and small fish around the rocky headlands at either end, decent for casual snorkelling if you bring your own gear. Development is minimal — a scatter of sunbed and umbrella rentals, plus a seasonal beach bar (Barefoot Bistro) doing burgers, pad thai, and drinks at beach-premium prices during high season. Outside those months, facilities thin out to just toilets and showers.
Insider Tip: Agree a pickup time with your longtail driver before they leave, and get it in writing or a photo of the boat number — stranded tourists waving down passing boats is a recurring complaint on this beach.
- Access: Longtail boat from Patong (10-20 min, ~1,200-2,000 THB return) or jungle trail (15-30 min, steep)
- Entry fee: 200 THB for trail walk-ins; usually free arriving by boat
- Best season: December-May; monsoon swell (Jun-Oct) can stop boats running
- Facilities: Toilets, showers, seasonal beach bar — no lifeguards
Freedom Beach sits within Karon rather than Patong, even though most boats leave from Patong’s pier. For beaches with easier road access nearby, Kata and Karon beaches are a short drive away, and the Kata-Karon Viewpoint gives you a look down at this whole stretch of coast before you commit to the boat trip.
