Hat Nai Phlao

Hat Nai Phlao is a crescent of white sand at the southern end of Ao Khanom, curling for roughly 2 km between hills that run close to the shore at both ends of the bay. It sits inside Hat Khanom-Mu Ko Thale Tai National Park, which is still classed as a preparatory park — so there’s no entry fee or checkpoint, just open beach access. The sand is fine, the water is generally calm, and the surrounding hills give the bay a more enclosed feel than the flatter coastline further north.

Khanom’s waters hold one of Thailand’s few resident populations of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, which turn pink as adults, and this stretch of coast is part of that range. Sightings from the beach itself aren’t something to count on, though — boat operators in Khanom run dedicated early-morning dolphin trips, with the best chance between March and September. Treat a “pink dolphin tour” as a real possibility rather than a guarantee, whatever an operator promises. Away from the water, a handful of small beach restaurants serve fresh seafood and standard Thai dishes, mostly geared to the low-key resorts and guesthouses scattered along the bay rather than a built-up strip.

Insider Tip: Ao Thong Yi, just north of Hat Nai Phlao, has calmer, shallower water and some coral at its southern end — a better bet than Nai Phlao itself if snorkelling is the goal.

The beach stays quiet most of the year. There’s no beach-club scene and no jet-ski rental stands — the loudest thing most days is the surf. That works in its favour if the point of the trip is rest rather than nightlife, but it also means don’t expect much after dark; Khanom town, a short drive north, has the area’s restaurants and shops.

Watch out: Shade along the sand is patchy, and the rainy season (June-October) brings rougher water and less reliable weather for both swimming and dolphin trips. November-February is the most comfortable stretch for both.
