Kanchanapisek Non-formal Education Centre — known locally as “the college in the palace” (วิทยาลัยในวัง) — is a working vocational school in Salaya, Nakhon Pathom, set up under a royal initiative to keep Thailand’s traditional artisan skills alive. It is not a museum or an exhibit hall: there are no interactive displays or demonstration classrooms open to browsing visitors. What it is: a real school teaching the chang sip mu (ten traditional crafts) — the guild skills of painting, sculpture, carving, gilding, lacquerware and mother-of-pearl inlay, stucco, casting, turning, and puppetry — that were historically passed down inside royal workshops and are otherwise disappearing.

The centre runs under a partnership between the Bureau of the Royal Household and the Ministry of Education’s Office of the Non-Formal and Informal Education (กศน.), reflecting a royal initiative connected to HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s long-running push to conserve Thai craft heritage. Enrolment is open to any Thai resident aged 15 or over — no art background required — for three main disciplines: painting (chang khian), sculpture (chang pan), and lacquerware/mother-of-pearl inlay (chang rak). The full course runs 800 hours over eight months, weekdays 09:00-15:00; shorter 60-300 hour modules are also offered. Tuition itself is free; students cover materials plus a refundable 300 THB deposit against damage.
