Khao Chao Mae Thapthim Thong

Khao Chao Mae Thapthim Thong is a small hilltop shrine and viewpoint above Pak Nam Pran, the fishing village where the Pran Buri river meets the Gulf of Thailand in Pran Buri. A Chinese-style shrine to the goddess Chao Mae Thapthim Thong sits at the top alongside an oversized concrete crocodile statue — an odd pairing until you hear the local story behind it.

The legend dates the shrine to roughly two hundred years ago, when a Chinese trader is said to have sailed to this stretch of coast following an old treasure map. He climbed the hill, found jars of silver at the summit, and built the shrine in thanks. The crocodile references the animal once common in the mangroves and river mouth below, back when the estuary was wilder than the tidy fishing harbour it is today. Locals still visit to pay respects and ask for luck, and the shrine draws a steady trickle of Thai visitors alongside the occasional curious traveller who’s climbed up for the view rather than the story.

That view is the real draw for most people who make the short climb: Pak Nam Pran’s fishing boats and river mouth spread out below, the coastline running north toward Khao Kalok and, on a clear day, the limestone outline of Sam Roi Yot further along the Gulf. It’s a modest hill by Thai standards, so this isn’t a strenuous hike — more a short flight of steps and a paved path — but the payoff in coastal panorama is out of proportion to the effort.

Insider Tip: Time the climb for late afternoon, when the light softens over the estuary and the fishing boats are often heading back in — a better photo window than the flat midday sun.

Watch out: There’s minimal shade on the way up, so this gets hot fast around midday; carry water even for a short climb.
