Kra Isthmus

A large concrete signboard beside Phetkasem Highway marks the narrowest stretch of the Malay Peninsula, in Ban Thap Li, Kra Buri district — about 66 km south of Ranong town. This is the Kra Isthmus: the point where the Andaman coast (here, the Kra Buri River, which forms the Thailand-Myanmar border) sits closest to the Gulf of Thailand coast near Chumphon on the opposite side. Sources disagree on the exact figure — 44 km is the most commonly cited international measurement, though Thai tourism sources give anywhere from 50 to 56 km depending on which coastal points are used.

The site itself is a roadside stop, not a park. A viewpoint looks out over the Kra Buri River, with Myanmar visible on the far bank — a striking enough scene to justify a photo, but there’s no trail network, no forest walk, and nothing resembling a nature reserve here. Facilities are limited to the marker and a small pull-off area; anyone picturing a hiking destination should recalibrate before making a special trip.

The isthmus has carried strategic weight since well before Thailand existed in its current form — it was the shortest overland portage route between the Indian Ocean and the Gulf, used by traders moving goods across the peninsula rather than sailing the long way around through the Strait of Malacca. That history is also why a canal across the isthmus has been proposed, on and off, for more than a hundred years. None has ever been built, and there’s no active construction here — what stands today is the marker, not a waterway.

Watch out: Don’t confuse this with a national park or wildlife area — despite what older write-ups of the site describe, there are no marked trails or rainforest walks at the marker itself. Nearby Kra Buri district does have genuine forest attractions, but they’re separate sites.

The marker sits within Ranong’s Kra Buri district, close to the cave art at Tham Phra Khayang and the hillside coffee plantation at Gong Valley — both better reasons to detour off the highway than the marker alone.
