Lop Buri Zoo

Lop Buri Zoo sits on Naresuan Road in the town centre, a small municipal zoo that’s been part of the province’s tourist offering long before Lop Buri leaned into its famous street-monkey population as a drawcard. Entry costs 30 THB per person — adult and child, Thai and foreign visitor pay the same — and the gates are open daily from 08:30 to 17:00.

The collection leans toward native Thai species — gibbons, several bird species, and a run of snakes and reptiles — alongside a smaller number of exotics. It’s a modest municipal facility rather than a destination zoo, and that shows in the infrastructure: enclosures are compact and dated rather than naturalistic, and animal welfare has been a recurring complaint in visitor reviews, particularly around the primate section and the weekend shows.

Watch out: Multiple recent visitor reports describe small, rusty cages and animals showing visible signs of stress, especially the primates. If captive-animal welfare is a concern for you, this zoo won’t put your mind at ease — treat that as a fair warning rather than a reason to avoid the province altogether.

Worth saying plainly rather than dressing up: the Saturday and Sunday monkey, gibbon, and snake shows are the kind of animal-performance format that larger Thai zoos — Chiang Mai Zoo, Khao Kheow Open Zoo — have been moving away from. It still draws local families for a cheap half-day out, and at 30 THB it’s not pretending to be anything more than that.

Insider Tip: If you do go, visit on a weekday morning before 10:00. The animals are more active before the midday heat, and you’ll skip the noise and crowding of the weekend show schedule.

For travellers who’d rather see Thai wildlife without the captivity trade-off, Lop Buri province has two real alternatives within about an hour’s drive: Khao Som Phot Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected non-hunting area near Chai Badan with over 200 recorded bird species and resident gibbons in natural forest, and Sublangka Wildlife Sanctuary, 155 square kilometres of forest in Lam Sonthi district. Both are free to enter and put you in genuinely wild habitat rather than a cage.

If you’re travelling with young kids and want an easy, cheap stop between Lop Buri’s temple ruins and its monkey shrines, the zoo still works for that. Just don’t build your Lop Buri day around it.
